Hotwire graphical terminal

Hotwire is a graphical terminal intended to replace the interactive command execution portion of a typical Unix shell. It includes much of the functionality found in the combination of a terminal emulator, a shell, and core utilities like ls and grep.

Here’s a video I found on youtube, its awesome!

Installing Hotwire in Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy):

There are two ways of going about it, either download the source and compile it manually or get a precompiled package from getdeb.net

The easiest way is with the getdeb.net package, you can get it here.
Chose the package that is right for your system, I’m gonna go with Ubuntu Gutsy 32 bits.

After downloading just type this to install:

sudo dpkg –install hotwire_0.599-1~getdeb1_all.deb

And thats it! Hotwire should appear under the Accessories menu.

  1. This music sucks.

  2. Great find, I’ll certainly will be installing this after I upgrade Ubuntu.

  3. Yeah, I agree - the music sucks.

  4. cool looking program, but did we really need the (crappy) music? I’d say more Compiz effects would have made the video that much more enjoyable…

  5. Dude, what pre-historic version of Ubuntu are you using?
    You mistakingly advised:

    sudo dpkg –install hotwire_0.599-1~getdeb1_all.deb

Why not just double click it and click the big ‘install’ button.

    Your suggestion is wrong because:
    a- it requires a terminal
b- it does not deal with dependencies, it checks them, but it does not download them

The proper way to do with on the terminal level (if you insist) is

    gdebi -i hotwire_0.599-1~getdeb1_all.deb

Do not use the dpkg tool, it will only work when all dependencies are already installed.

But most people just double click and click the big install button.
It’s advice like this that makes people think Linux still requires the terminal. It does not, but posts like this make us think it does!

  9. I installed it and removed it after 5 minutes of usage. A bunch of things I need were not supported. This software is too early to be released but I sure love the idea.
So far nothing beats the black screen.
